It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. As we mentally prepare for the fall and winter seasons, now is a good time to check up on the quality of your air conditioning and furnace units, and whether or not you’ll need a replacement. When the first cold day of winter hits, you don’t want that furnace refusing to work. Similarly, preparing your A/C for hibernation can ensure it operates in tip-top shape when the heat rolls back around in 2018. Here’s a quick checklist of things to go over with your HVAC units as the seasons change.
1: Check Up on Those Filters
This is something everybody should be doing on their active units at least once every 3 months. For your air conditioning unit, replace the air filter at the end of the season. Next summer’s start-up will be super easy and you won’t have to worry about getting new filters. For furnaces, it’s best to check the filters regularly while they are in use. A good rule of thumb is every thirty days. If it still looks clean, hold off on replacing the filter until next month. If you feel like the filters aren’t doing their job properly – or are overly dirty – consider calling an HVAC professional. If it’s been more than 15 years since you replaced one of your units, this is a big warning sign that it might be time for a replacement.
2: Clean the Unit
We aren’t just talking about filters now. Clean the exterior surfaces of your air conditioning and furnace units. Similarly, make sure the area around the units is clean, particularly with your furnace. Any household items that are sitting on top of – or next to – one of your HVAC units can block ducts and return vents. Furthermore, by cleaning your units you can determine whether or not their dirtiness was resulting in decreased efficiency or problems. If said problems persist, it might be time to call up a professional or think about a replacement.
3: Give Everything a Good Listen
More often than not you can tell a great deal about the health of your HVAC units by simply listening to them. The air conditioning unit in your home should sound nice and smooth. If you hear grinding, buzzing, or clunking noises, it could be a sign that your need a repair or even a completely new unit. The same process applies for your furnace. If anything sounds entirely out of the ordinary, call up an HVAC individual for an inspection before taking drastic measures.
4: Set up an Appointment with an HVAC Professional
Tune-up’s are incredibly important for maintaining your HVAC units. After all, there’s only so much to inspect without the help of professionals. If you are working with a brand-new unit, it’s okay to be more infrequent with these check-ups. However, if your A/C or furnace are approaching 10 to 15 years of age, make it a habit to get them checked regularly. Not only will you avoid potential disasters, but you’ll know when the time is right to upgrade to a new unit.
