West Jordan, UT
Lying on the western banks of the Jordan River, West Jordan got its name and was settled in 1848 and became a city in 1941. West Jordan is a rapidly growing suburb of Salt Lake City. It is the fourth most populous city in the state, due to its mixed economy. Mining, mills, and agriculture were the basis of its economy in the early years. The first leather tannery west of the Mississippi River was built in West Jordan in 1851. In the heart of West Jordan, Archibald Gardner built one of the first area’s sawmills. He continued to build houses and mills, which have become historical monuments. The buildings have since been renovated into a collection of specialty shops. Take a drive west up 90th south and you will see this enchanted area that is now known as Gardner Village.
Today West Jordan is home to over 3,000 businesses, 113,699 residents, and 48 parks. One of the top things to see and do in West Jordan is a visit to the Kennecott Copper Mine. It has been declared a National Historic Landmark due to its heritage and has been renamed the Bingham Copper Mine. It also has the claim to fame of being the largest man-made excavation on earth. The mine has been in operation since 1906 and is still in working order to this day, extracting copper from the earth. Nestled in the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains is the quaint new community of Daybreak built in collaboration with the mine. Among other attraction in West Jordan is the Schorr Art Gallery, West Jordan Symphony, Jordan Landing Shopping Center, Conservation Garden Park, and Veterans Memorial Park. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is waiting for you in West Jordan, Utah.
