West Valley City, UT
Located in the State of Utah and in the Salt Lake County, West Valley City is a booming suburb of Salt Lake City. The population at the 2010 census was 129,480, which made it the second-largest city in Utah. The first known residents of the western part of Salt Lake Valley were Native Americans from the Ute and Shoshone tribes. The first European settlers were from the Latter Day Saint Church that was escaping persecution in the Midwest. They were also known as the Mormon Pioneers. They first arrived in 1847 and the first area to be claimed was by Joseph Harker and his family. The area was named “Over Jordan” meaning to the land west of the Jordan River that ran through the valley. Welsh Mormon settlers also came and they developed irrigation systems and farming in the area. Irrigation of the land started in 1881 and fruit trees were their main crop. Almost 100 years later in 1980, the Large unincorporated area became incorporated. The area was variously known as Granger, Chesterfield, Redwood, and Hunter. More recently in the 2016 census, there were 136,574 people in West Valley City. Most of the population of West Valley City is caucasian and the other large portion is Hispanic or Latino, with a small black, Native American, Asian and Pacific Islander population. West Valley city is home to the Utah Grizzlies and the Maverick Center of the ECHL. You will also find the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, The Ridge Golf Course, Stonebridge Golf Course, Valley Fair Mall, Rocky Mountain Raceways, Hale Centre Theatre, and the USANA Amphitheatre. WVC has one of the last drive-in movie theatres left in Utah and is a great place to take in some good old-fashioned fun!
