Where to Find Water Leaks
When your home’s plumbing system has a leak it can increase your monthly bills and cause water damage to your house. It’s best to find these leaks immediately and have them professionally repaired. There are a few leaks you should keep your eye out for.
Hot Water Heater
On every hot water heater, there is a pressure relief valve to ensure that there isn’t too much pressure built up within the unit. This valve is connected to a drain pipe which can leak if it’s old or damaged. To check for a leak, listen for a hissing sound. This is the sound of air at a high pressure trying to escape a small hole or crack.
Toilet Tank
The tank of your toilet could be leaking and you would have no idea. To check for leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank of the toilet. Wait a few minutes and then check the bowl. If the colored water winds up in the bowl, then you have a leak that needs to be fixed.
Faucets
There are multiple faucets spread throughout your home. Some are attached to the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, on the side of your home, and you can even include the shower head. These faucets can become loose from their connections and have water trickle down them. A leaky faucet is not uncommon so be sure to periodically check all of the faucets in your home.
Savings
Locating any leaks in your home can actually save water and money when you decide to call the plumber. If you can tell the plumber where the leak is, they can start fixing it right away which will cut down on inspection and labor time.
