How To Snake A Drain
Have you ever had a clogged toilet or drain that couldn’t be fixed with a plunger? Meet the solution to that problem the drain snake! Knowing how to use this handy tool can help you clear the toughest of blockages.
Step 1: Purchase a Drain Snake
The simplest part of this process is going to the store and actually purchasing the drain snake. This tool will be labeled as a drain auger and can be anywhere from a few dollars to roughly $25. It makes sense to purchase the higher quality one so you can have it for years to come.
Step 2: Place the End of the Snake Into Drain
Slap on your trusty gloves and goggles, and place the end of the snake into the drain; sink or toilet. Once it has successfully entered the piping, start pushing the rest of the snake in until it reaches the material that is causing the blockage. You may hit a few snags due to the turns of the piping, but keep feeding the line until you are sure that it has met with the blockage.
Step 3: Pull the Snake Out of the Drain
Now that the end of the auger has reached the clog, keep feeding the line so that it pierces the blockage. Give it a few wiggles and then begin pulling the snake out. The blockage will either break up into multiple pieces or you will pull out a solid mass. When the snake is pulled out and you believe that the blockage has been cleared, flush the toilet or turn on the faucet. Repeat this process until the clog is no more!
