Five Common Plumbing Emergencies

Sink overflowing with water

No one wants to deal with plumbing issues, but when exactly does annoyance turn into an emergency? Here are some of the most common plumbing emergencies and what you should watch for.

Clogged Toilet/overflowing Toilet

The toilet is the by far the most used fixture in your house and can be a huge inconvenience if not working correctly. Whether your toilet is clogged or has a hardware malfunction, the first step to take in a plumbing emergency is to find the source of the water flow and shut it off. Unclogging a toilet can be straightforward and easy to fix with a plunger. In the event that the clog is more serious, your friends at SameDay are on call away from helping out.

No Hot Water

Common water heater problems often include leaking tanks, strange odors, and crazy temperature shifts. If your water heater is leaking, contact a professional immediately as this is a more serious problem. Fixing your water heater without assistance from a professional is not recommended. For hot water related issues, it can be as simply as flushing the water tank. However, be sure to check with your utility company to make sure the issue isn’t on their end.

Clogged Sink

Slow drains and clogged sinks are likely the most common plumbing issues you will come across. At first it is mostly irritating, but if you wait too long to resolve the issue the clog can become more serious and lead to water flow stopping entirely. More and more of these serious clogs can lead to links and more serious problems down the road.

Bathtubs/shower Drains

A clogged shower or bathtub is often accompanied by gurgling noises and slow drainage of water. Unlike a clogged sink which is easier to snake, these drains can require a greater deal of legwork. More often than not these buildups are caused by hair and soap scum, and can be arduous to remove. Make a habit of snaking your drain frequently to avoid such problems.

Sewer System Backup

Sewage backups can happen to anyone in any home. Three common causes of sewer backups include blockage in the main sanitary pipe, natural disasters, and blockage due to tree roots. While natural disasters are unavoidable, there are ways you can prevent backups in your home such as disposing of food and grease properly. Similarly, try to dispose of all paper products appropriately. Signs of a sewer system backup include bad odors coming from the drains, gurgling toilets/bathtubs, and multiple drain clogs.

No matter how well you take care you take of your toilets and sinks, plumbing emergencies can occur. In the event that one does, know you’re not alone.
