7 Signs That It’s Time To Call a Plumber

Understanding the warning signs of water heater, drain, and plumbing issues can help you avoid costly repairs and damage. Here are key indicators that it’s time to call a plumber.

1. Water Discoloration

If you notice rusty or discolored water coming from your taps, this is often a sign that your water heater is starting to fail. The rust can come from the inside of the tank or the pipes connected to it. Discoloration usually indicates corrosion or sediment buildup–both of which can lead to leaks and failure of the unit.

If you see rust in your water, call a plumber right away. Ignoring it could result in costly damage to your home.

2. Rust on Water Heater Connections

Rust around the connections of your water heater is another major red flag. This could mean that the tank is corroding from the inside out.

If left unchecked, rust will eventually lead to leaks or a burst water heater, which can cause water damage to your home. If you spot rust or corrosion, have a plumber inspect the water heater to assess the damage and replace the unit if necessary.

3. Strange Noises Coming from Your Water Heater

Loud or unusual noises coming from your water heater—such as banging, popping, or rumbling—are signs of trouble. These sounds are typically caused by sediment buildup inside the tank.

As the sediment hardens, it makes your water heater work harder, which can lead to overheating and damage. If you hear strange noises, don’t ignore them. It’s a good idea to have a plumber flush the tank or inspect the unit to prevent further damage.

4. Slow Drains or Gurgling Sounds

Slow drains are one of the most common signs that your plumbing system needs attention. If water is draining slowly from your sinks, tubs, or toilets, there may be a clog in the pipes.

Gurgling sounds–which can occur when water is running through the drains–are also a warning sign. This could indicate a blockage or venting problem in the drain line.

If left untreated, these issues can lead to a complete blockage or even a sewage backup. It’s best to call a plumber for a drain inspection to determine the cause and prevent further damage.

5. Foul Odors Coming from Drains

Unpleasant smells coming from your drains are never a good sign. They may indicate a clog, sewer gas leak, or even bacteria buildup inside the pipes.

Any time you notice foul odors, especially in your kitchen or bathroom drains, it’s a good idea to have a plumber take a look. Ignoring bad smells could lead to more serious problems like a sewer line backup.

6. Funny Sounds from Drains

If your drain sounds like it’s “lugging” or making odd noises when water flows through it, this can be a sign of a blockage. You might hear sounds similar to a jug of milk being emptied.

That is a signal that something is restricting the water flow. This could eventually lead to a full blockage if not addressed.

7. Water Around the Base of Your Water Heater

Pooling water around the base of your water heater is a clear sign that something is wrong. Whether it’s a small leak or a significant one, water around your heater could indicate a failed seal, valve, or even corrosion in the tank.

Any time you see water near the heater, it’s time to call a plumber. A small leak today could turn into a much bigger problem tomorrow. Catching problems early can help prevent costly damage and keep your plumbing system running smoothly.
