What to Do When a Pipe Freezes
Throughout the winter there are some days and nights where the temperature drops below the freezing point. These conditions are terrible for your home’s plumbing because water pipes can freeze and burst open. There are measures you can take to avoid your pipes from freezing, but sometimes the unthinkable can happen anyways.
Locating
On nights where it is especially cold, take a quick walk around your home and inspect your plumbing. If there are any pipes that are covered in ice or look like they have frost on them, they could be frozen. Check each faucet, shower, and toilet to see if the water is still flowing because if not, the pipe has most likely frozen over.
Thawing
To avoid having a pipe burst and flooding ensue, shut off the water supply valve. The average claim cost of a broken pipe with water damage is around $5,000. Wrap the pipe in heat tape or begin using a hair dryer or space heater to warm it up. Have the area around the pipe prepared in case there is a water leak or burst. Sometimes a pipe can have a small piece of ice blocking the rest of the water; and like a champagne bottle it can spew everywhere after it is popped open.
Bursting
A pipe can burst even after all of your valiant efforts to prevent it. If you walk into a room and discover a mini-flood, run over to the water shut off valve. Once the water surge has been stopped, pick up the phone and call a plumber. While you wait for the plumber to arrive, start to mop all of the water up to prevent serious water damage. After the water is soaked up, place a dehumidifier in the room for the next few days.
