5 Ways to Manage the Summer Heat

summer heat

As the weather starts to warm up, it’s important to think about the ways you can manage the heat in your own home. After all, running the air conditioner all day isn’t exactly energy efficient. Here are a few quick things you can do to keep the temperatures down in your house during the dog days of summer.

1: Adding Fans

Adding fans around the house is a simple, cost-effective way to manage the heat. If you are concerned about the noise, simply spread them out around your home. Also be sure to leave all of your doors open so the air can circulate freely. Fans may not make the literal air cooler in your home, but they can certainly make your living spaces more comfortable.

2: Draw the Curtains

The summer sun can be relentless at times. When you leave your curtains open, all the heat from the sunbeams can drastically heat up your home. As such, it’s important to keep your curtains closed during the day while you are at work or school. At the very least, make sure you draw the blinds around the house. This will deflect the natural light and minimize the suns impact on your home temperature.

3: Open Your Windows at Night

Along the same lines as closing your curtains during the day, be sure to open your windows at night. Not only has research shown that we sleep better when temperatures are lower, but it is a cost-effective way to cool down the house quickly. Just be sure to close them back up when you start your morning routine.

4: Skip the Oven & Stove

No matter what, any usage of your stovetop or oven is going to warm up your home. An easy solution to this problem is to dust off the grill. Many of your favorites like meats, pizza, veggies, and even certain desserts can be grilled. The best part about this is that you aren’t letting off heat into your home, which ensures that the indoor temperature stays nice and cool. If you do have to use the stove, be sure to turn the overhead fan on to improve the airflow.

5: Maximize Your A/C Unit

If you’re going to use your air conditioner, it’s important to maximize its efficiency. This starts with installing a programmable thermostat. If you don’t have one already, this is something the pros at SameDay can help you with. During the hours you are at home, try to keep the temperature around 75 degrees. This may seem warm at first, but overtime your body will adjust. When you are away from your house, turn off the A/C to avoid wasting energy. After all, with nobody home there’s no reason to keep the place cool! And of course, change your A/C filters regularly to ensure it’s operating at peak performance.
