Outdoor Landscaping 101: Outdoor Showers

outdoor shower

Outdoor showers are perfect for rinsing off before hopping in the swimming pool. It’s also useful for preventing kids (and pets) from tracking in mud after spending the day in the yard. Here’s how to create your own outdoor shower this summer!

Depending on a few factors, each outdoor shower has a different set of requirements. It’s important when creating an outdoor shower that you plan accordingly for things such as plumbing, landscaping, et cetera. Installing your outdoor shower can be challenging or straightforward, but it all depends on the location and if the shower installment is permanent or temporary.

Temporary

Some outdoor showers use attachments that connect to garden hoses and require no additional plumbing work. Temporary outdoor showers are typically the least expensive option you can select. One thing to remember however, your geographical location should be factored into your decision. Winterizing your outdoor shower can cost you some time and money, so if you’re expecting snowstorms this might not be the best option.

Permanent

Permanent, mounted outdoor showers are typically what most people want. To save the most money for a project such as this, your shower should be located on a wall where hot and cold water pipes already exist. Installing hot and cold water pipes is not a recommended DIY project, but the experts at SameDay are happy to help!

Pick Your Base

While some outdoor showers do not require a base, it is recommended simply because it is more comfortable. The first things to consider is the material of your base. It should be weather resistant, solid, secure, and allow for proper drainage. Utilize a patio or deck if possible, as it allows for easy installation of the base as it can sit right on top of that surface.

Drainage

Outdoor showers don’t generally need a complex drainage system like their indoor counterparts often do. The one thing that is necessary is a system that allows for water to be properly carried away. While you may envision an “au naturel” setting for your outdoor shower, there are regulatory requirements to be followed. You should work with a professional to avoid any violation of local building codes.

Enclosure

Other than the drainage aspects of an outdoor shower, the enclosure is one of the most important elements of the project. The enclosure of your outdoor shower should be strategic in placement and offer some privacy. Enclosures range from nothing to a wooden stall and a hinged door. An enclosure should offer privacy if desired, but allow for air circulation to prevent mold from forming.

All in all, adding an outdoor shower to your backyard is surely achievable. If you’re on a budget, purchase a freestanding hose-fed shower and you’re good to go! For a more permanent solution, hire a professional to help do the plumbing for you.
